WA’s $1Billion Tonkin Hwy Extension & Thomas Rd Upgrade moves to the next stage supporting approx 4,400 jobs in the future

The procurement for the $1Billion Tonkin Hwy Extension & Thomas Rd Upgrade moves to the next stage, with the shortlisted contractors being asked to submit proposals for Package 2 (Tonkin Highway extension from Mundijong Road to South Western Highway.)

The shortlist of builders include:

  • Tonkin Connect Alliance – comprised of CPB Contractors, WA Limestone, Carey, Aurecon and Jacobs
  • Tonkin Extension Alliance – comprised of BMD, Georgiou, Civcon, GHD and BG&E
  • Tonkin South Alliance – comprised of Acciona, NRW, AECOM and Arup

Package 1, which covers the duplication of Thomas Road and the extension to Mundijong Road, has closed its request for proposals. Both packages, which would support roughly 4,400 employments, will be awarded by late 2024 with construction starting mid-2025.

The projects, which are supported by more than $1 billion from the governments of Western Australia and Australia, will enhance safety, connectivity, and travel times with key features such as a 14-kilometer highway extension, grade-separated interchanges, underpasses, and roundabouts.

The Thomas Road Upgrade project aims to improve intersections, create shared walkways, and enlarge and duplicate 4.5 kilometers of road. This initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion, enhance safety, and better connect local communities.
