WA Government commits $2.8 billion to build Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant, with circa $13 million directed to WA subcontractors.
The Cook Labor Government is allocating $2.8 billion for the construction of the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant, a crucial project to secure Perth’s future water supply.
This plant, which is the third of its kind in Western Australia, will have a capacity of up to 100 billion litres and is situated near the Alkimos Water Precinct. The goal is to secure drinking water for 2.5 million people.
The project, supported by the state’s budget surplus, has commenced with site preparation, overseen by Georgiou Group through a $29.8 million contract. The entire contract value will be spent locally, with almost $13 million directed to WA subcontractors and 14% spent with Aboriginal businesses.
The development aims to shield the plant from view, reduce noise, and create local job opportunities.
Around 70 local jobs will be created, including opportunities for apprentices and trainees.
The project, approved by both Commonwealth and State regulators, is set to have net-zero greenhouse gas emissions during construction and operation.
The contract to design, construct, and operate the plant is expected to be awarded in early 2024, with the first 50-billion-litre stage scheduled for completion in 2028.
