Record Employment, with an all-time high of 1.6 million, boosted by Western Australia’s Robust Economy

Recent data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicates a 1.7% surge in Western Australia’s employment rate or 26, 319 jobs in February, which marks the state’s strongest growth in over three years. With the unemployment rate dipping to 3.6% in February, the number of unemployed in WA fell by 11,419 for the month.

In February, WA’s total employment surpassed 1.6 million for the first time, with both men and women achieving record employment levels. The state’s unemployment rate dropped to 3.6%, below the national rate of 3.7%, with 11,419 fewer unemployed individuals.

Since the Labor government took office in 2017, over 300,000 jobs have been created, marking a 23.4% increase. This includes 210,434 jobs during the current term, exceeding the target by over 68%.

Additionally, population data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows a 3.3% increase in WA’s population over the past year, the highest in nearly 15 years. This growth is fueled by strong net overseas migration, with WA being one of only two states experiencing growth in net interstate migration.

These positive indicators align with recent ABS data showing WA’s domestic economy growing by 4.7% in 2023, twice the national growth rate and the highest among states and territories.

Treasurer Rita Saffioti commented on the robust economic performance, emphasizing the government’s commitment to job creation and economic resilience. She highlighted WA’s significant contribution to the national economy and the government’s focus on investing in essential services and infrastructure to support Western Australians.
