Perth’s City Council’s $299.5 million budget set to include Swan River waterfront transformation

Perth is set to launch several projects in 2024-2025 to enhance its status as a livable, sustainable, and prosperous city.

The City Council approved a $299.5 million budget for these projects which include:

  • Sustainability improvements to Supreme Court Gardens
  • Development of an East Perth sports and recreation hub
  • Revitalization of Russell Square and upgrades to James Street

Among these initiatives is the Riverfront Masterplan, revealed by Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas, as one of the key initiatives. The Masterplan aims to transform the Swan River into a world-class city park, with community engagement as a crucial next step.

The 2024-25 budget includes a $57 million capital works program to secure Perth’s future as a world-class city, with $184.5 million in funding for core services such as event sponsorship, community safety, waste management, and public health.

Perth has seen a significant increase in visitor spending since December 2022, leading to a budget of $21.1 million for events, business grants, and sponsorship programs. The budget also allocates $37 million for maintaining clean streets and parks and protecting trees. The council has implemented a budget with one of the lowest rate rises in the metropolitan area at 2.95%, emphasizing prudent spending and low rates.
