Fitzroy River Bridge reopens ahead of tourist high season – 6 months ahead of schedule
The new Fitzroy River Bridge has reopened in the remote Western Australia Kimberley region, six months ahead of schedule.
The Kimberley region, devastated by floods following Tropical Cyclone Ellie in early 2023, has reopened a key arterial bridge along the Great Northern Highway, connecting West Kimberley to East Kimberley.
The new two-lane Fitzroy River Bridge, which connects the popular tourism hotspots Broome and Kununurra, has been completed ahead of schedule and before the 2024 high season begins in the region.
Tourism Western Australia Managing Director Carolyn Turnbull expressed excitement about the new bridge, allowing more visitors to travel between Broome and East Kimberley.
The bridge is managed by Main Roads and funded by the Federal and Western Australian Governments under Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
The bridge is expected to attract more visitors to the region’s otherworldly attractions, including Mitchell Falls, Bungle Bungle Range, and Lake Argyle.
