RESIGNING FROM YOU ROLE

Handing in your notice and leaving on good terms

If you have decided it’s time to leave your role, there are a few things you need to do to prepare for leaving. If you are unsure about the process of handing in your notice, look into your contract to confirm your notice period and other conditions initially.

Writing your Resignation

Most businesses from a HR perspective will require you to write your letter of resignation. This doesn’t have to be long and you don’t have to go into detail about your reasons for leaving, it’s a formal document for employment records.

Be strategic about timing your resignation

There is never a good time for your manager or leadership team, I’d suggest doing this in the afternoon or on a Friday morning. It does not affect peoples full day or week and doesn’t disrupt the greater team; it also gives people time to reflect.

Tell your boss in person

Once you feel completely ready, book a meeting with your manager or leadership team, don’t tell anyone else until you have informed your management out of respect. Explain the situation to them and find out what the next steps are including handing over your area and responsibilities.

Prepare for any outcome

Even if you get on well with your manager and have a good relationship, you should still prepare yourself for a negative reaction. You will need to remember that they are losing a member of staff and now have to begin preparing for your departure.

If you have a notice period, generally you will be expected to work as normal for this duration. This is the time that can define your legacy in that business so leave with your head held high. However, you should prepare for all eventualities.

Some employers may ask you to leave with immediate effect, especially if you are going to a competitor, this is commonly known as "garden leave". You should also be aware that if this happens, the company will still have to pay you for your contractual notice period as normal. Try not to let it get personal and cause a dispute, you are leaving your role and taking up a better opportunity; such is life!

Handover documents

A great way to make a final good impression is to help your manager with the handover process. This will mean your replacement can begin working effectively. By writing a handover document, you can give your current company and the person filling your position, a comprehensive guide to what you do and how best to do it. This should include all passwords, details of clients, suppliers etc.

N.B. Leaving on a good note is important, especially as you might need a reference one day!!! Informal referencing is also extremely common so don’t burn bridges!!!
