Constructed with more than 10,000 tonnes of rock and with steel pipes, the first temporary Fitzroy River causeway with low-level crossing, a five metre-wide 200 metre-long, and single-lane rock, will be open to four-wheel-vehicles on April 3, 2023 at 10 am.

A second temporary crossing suitable for higher traffic volumes and larger vehicles that are expected over the upcoming dry season will soon be constructed and is anticipated to be operation in May 2023 if river conditions continue to recede.

Design work for the new Fitzroy River Bridge is progressing well. Both the temporary low-level crossing and the new Fitzroy River Bridge, which is scheduled to be operational by mid-2024, are being jointly funded by the Albanese and McGowan Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Murray Watt said the second low-level crossing would provide a vital connection for the Kimberley region since the destruction of the Fitzroy River Bridge has isolated much of West Kimberley and cut off East Kimberley, a major agricultural region, from its supply centres and markets in Perth for at least five months. Additionally, Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister, Catherine King said this is an important step on the way to recovery.

The Albanese and McGowan government are working together with the goal to support communities impacted by the supply chain interruptions through rebuilding the low-level crossing and through the $42 million ongoing freight assistance package.
