$23million contract awarded to begin the $250million Great Eastern Highway Upgrades initiative by the Australian and Western Australian governments.
Work is set to begin on additional upgrades for the Great Eastern Highway in Western Australia.
A $23 million contract awarded to Fulton Hogan will fund improvements, including road reconstruction, widening, and sealing across three key sections of the highway. These sections are:
- 4.4 kilometers between Carrabin and Bodallin
- 4.6 kilometers between Nulla Nulla South Road and west of Liddell Road
- 2.4 kilometers between Liddell Road and Granich Road
The project also involves intersection upgrades at Smyth Road, Nulla Nulla North Road, Bin Road, and Granich Road. Additional safety features will be added, such as new barriers, kerbs, signage, and road markings.
Senator Glenn Sterle highlighted that these upgrades reflect a broader investment in road safety across Australia, aimed at protecting locals, tourists, and freight drivers. State Member Ali Kent praised the project as a boost to safe and efficient travel between Kalgoorlie and Perth.
These improvements form part of the joint $250 million Great Eastern Highway Upgrades initiative by the Australian and Western Australian governments. Set to continue through 2028, the program focuses on enhanced safety and travel efficiency, with the current phase expected to finish by late 2025.
WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti emphasized the highway’s role as a key transport link for both regional communities and interstate travel, while Federal Minister Catherine King highlighted its importance for supporting local economies and the freight industry.
